Motivation Monday - New Year's Resoutions

We have reached the end of January already! A lot of us made New Year's resolutions to start the year. I know I made a few. Are you still working on your resolution, or have you become discouraged and given up already?

There are a few things you should think about when making a New Year's resolution. If you keep these things in mind it will help you stay on track to actually reach your goals.

  • What is the change you want to make?
  • Why do you want to make a change?
  • How are you going to make this change happen?
What is the change you want to make?
Since this is a fitness site, I'm going to make my examples fitness related. I know, "YOU'RE A GENIUS MIKE!" When I talk to people about their goals I usually hear one of two things. "I want to lose weight" or "I just want to get into shape". OK, nothing wrong with those goals, but try to delve a little bit deeper. Ask yourself, "do I want to lose weight?" or "look gooood" ;-)

Guy on the Left, or guy on the right? If your goal is to "Lose Weight", then guy on the left it is! Sessy!

Why do you want to make a change?
This one is important. There is a reason you want to make a change, and that reason is either for yourself or for someone you love. Do you have kids, grand kids, husband or wife you want to live a long happy life for? Do you want a change for your own self esteem, or your own self worth? Whatever the reason is, it is important to keep reminding yourself.

How are you going to make this change happen?
First, think about the first two questions and answer them honestly. Then make a plan! Go get help if you need it (I know a good personal trainer). You have a big change in mind. Break it down into small changes, then take it one decision at a time.
