Fat Friday - Genetically Modified Foods

Shoppers wary of genetically engineered foods find they're everywhere

Highlights of the article:

  • "Genetically modified plants grown from seeds engineered in labs now provide much of the food we eat." This even affects the meats we are eating! Think about what most of the cattle, chickens and pigs are eating. Genetically modified corn!
  • "The FDA and USDA say the engineered foods they've approved are safe - so safe, they don't even need to be labeled as such - and can't be significantly distinguished from conventional varieties." The word here that makes me think is "significantly". What do they consider significant?
  • "USDA regulations do not allow genetically modified seeds to be used in organic production, and organic farmers say that as engineered crops become more common, it will be harder to prevent contamination."
  • "messing with nature will always have collateral damage."
Go ahead and create genetically modified foods. I agree that we may have to genetically modify foods, use chemical fertilizers and pesticides in order to feed the ginormous world population. (even though it's going to be an unhealthy population) BUT, I think it is bull poo that they don't have to label their foods as such. Go ahead and put whatever you want in foods, just tell me what's in it! This is one of the reasons why I decided to start eating Organic foods. Organic is not perfect, but at least I know a little more about the food I'm putting into my body!

What do you think of Organic foods? What do you think about the USDA's regulations?
