Eat Red Meat: Part II

Yesterday I told you why red meat is not bad for you.  Today I am going to discuss why red meat is good for you and why it should be a part of your diet.

  • Fat: 3.5g
  • Saturated: 2g
  • Unsaturated: 1.5g
  • Carbohydrate: 0g
  • Protein: 23g
The two main macronutrients found in red meat are fat and protein.

Fat:
Everybody is scared of fat.  Especially terrible saturated fat found in red meat!  Most people don't realize there is a large amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids (Omega-3) found in red meat!  Especially grass fed meat.
Red meat also has "more omega-3 fatty acids than either chicken or pork, although fish is still a significantly better source than any of the red meats."

Protein:
Perhaps the most important macronutrient found in red meat is protein.  There are 8 essential amino acids.  (Although some sources say there are 9 essential amino acids, but for my purposes I will say there are 8)  Amino acids are the "building blocks" of protein.  Our body has 20 amino acids it uses to produce and repair muscle fibers.  Our body can create 12 of these amino acids.  This means we must consume 8 amino acids through our diet.  These amino acids are called the "essential amino acids".
"The protein is highly digestible, around 94% compared to the digestibility of 78% in beans and 86% in whole wheat [8]. Protein from meat provides all essential amino acids (lysine, threonine, methionine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, leucine, isoleucine, valine) and has no limiting amino acids."
If you are having trouble recovering from your workouts; eat more red meat!  It contains all essential amino acids and is easily digested which will help your body recover better and faster.

Evolution:
It is widely thought one of the reasons we evolved into the dominant species on earth was our ability to cook and consume meat.  Meat is...
  • Calorie Dense:  Lots of energy for early man to hunt, fish and berry pick!
  • Easily Digestible:  Less energy spent digesting means more energy to hunt, fish and berry pick!
  • Large Amounts of Omega-3:  Helped develop early man's big brains!
  • All Essential Amino Acids:  Early man could recover from long days of hunting, fishing, berry picking and taking out the trash (I have to assume early woman still made early man take out the trash!)
Now you have no excuse to not eat red meat (preferably grass fed/ free range).  Make it part of your diet!
