Twinkie Diet

A friend of mine asked me my opinion on the "Twinkie Diet".

Weight up, cholesterol up for man who lost 27 pounds on Twinkie Diet

First of all; shame on this guy for promoting the consumption of processed foods!  Yes, you can lose weight by restricting calories.  I call this a starvation diet.  You starve your body of essential nutrients and force your body to eat away at all its stored energy (fat and muscle).  You will get two results from a starvation diet...

  1. You will lose weight.
  2. You will be very unhealthy!
Yes, his cholesterol lowered.  But it can be argued cholesterol levels have very little to do with coronary heart disease and it has more to do with inflammation.

You will lose weight on a starvation diet, but is it the kind of weight you want to lose?  Much of the weight lost on a starvation diet is muscle mass.  When your body is being starved it is going to hold onto as much fat as it possibly can.  Storing fat is the most efficient way our body stores energy. When starving, the body wants to hold onto as much energy as it can to survive.  So yes; you will lose weight on the Twinkie Diet, but you will still have a high body fat % because of the loss of muscle mass.  This condition is called "Skinny-Fat".  You look skinny in jeans and a t-shirt, but fat and flabby when you take the shirt off!

Starvation diets cause malnutrition.  Twinkies, and other processed foods, have very little to no vitamins and minerals.  It is very hard to get adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals when consuming foods with no vitamins and minerals!  This is why more and more people are deficient in vitamins such as vitamin D and minerals such as calcium.  They are eating Twinkies instead of fruits and vegetables!

Twinkies, and other processed foods, are also loaded with preservatives, artificial colorings, flavor enhancers and many other food additives and chemicals!  Many of these food additives are directly, or indirectly, linked to increased risk of cancer.

Twinkies, and other processed foods, are also loaded with refined sugar!  Diabetes is a continually growing disease in the United States.  "Why is diabetes growing in the United States Mike?"  Because people are eating more and more Twinkies and other processed foods and less and less fruits and vegetables!

Good for the Twinkie guy.  He lost 27 pounds!  Now he can fit into smaller jeans.  And look forward to increased risk of depression, cancer and diabetes!

I can't imagine the amount of twinkies I would have to eat in one day to keep my calories up where they are now.

I also mention to people that the Twinkie diet operates on pretty much the same principle as Weight Watchers -- it's calorie restriction pure and simple. If you burn more than you consume, you'll lose weight, but that doesn't mean you'll be healthy.
