COMMUNITY NEWS/EVENTS - "Clean Eating Challenge"




No, that is not what "Clean Eating" is!  Lucky for you, we are going to help you learn what clean eating is, and show you how clean eating can change many aspects of your life.  The following is a copy of an email Ellen, CrossFit Syracuse's Partner and Business Manager, sent to all members of CrossFit Syracuse.  We welcome anybody who is interested in this challenge to please come to CrossFit Syracuse, or contact us, to learn more.  Don't hesitate; the challenge starts Thursday!

If you do miss the start date, you will not be eligible to win the challenge, but you can still come in and start your own Clean Eating Challenge.  Our personal trainers have all the knowledge you will need to help you get started, and help keep you motivated throughout your health/fitness journey.

The following was written by Ellen - 

We're excited to announce our Winter 2015 Clean Eating Challenge! The goal of the program is to improve your eating habits and show you how proper nutrition can drastically improve your performance in the gym. 

We'll be kicking off the 6 week challenge with a Potluck Dinner at the gym on Wednesday, January 7th at 6 pm (please note that the 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30pm classes will be cancelled that evening). All members are invited to attend and encouraged to bring a "clean" dish to pass (more on our definition of "clean" below). During the meal, our coaches will explain the nutrition plan and the particulars of the challenge. All information will be included in a packet that you can pick up that night or another time if you're unable to make the dinner. 

The challenge itself will run from Thursday, January 8 - Wednesday, February 18. We'll be looking at several criteria to measure your success:
  • Before and After Photos
  • % Change in Muscle Mass (measured by InBody bioelectrical impedance analysis device)
  • % Change in Body Fat (measured by InBody bioelectrical impedance analysis device)
  • Benchmark WOD Improvement
  • Strength Test Improvement
  • Daily Food Logging using MyFitnessPal - Our goal here is to help you discover which macronutrient ratios serve you best. What you eat and log will not count against you, but logging is a requirement to be eligible to win the challenge. Your nutrition choices will be reflected in your results and logging with this tool will provide you with the information you need to be successful. MyFitnessPal is a free app that you can use from any computer or mobile device. We suggest that you create your account and begin logging now so that you’re comfortable using the app when the challenge begins.
All criteria will be measured in any regular class on Thursday, January 8th and again on Wednesday, February 18th. Please plan to arrive 30 minutes before class on measurement days so we can properly process all athletes. 

At the end of the challenge, the CFS coaches will identify five finalists, and a challenge winner will be decided by our members with a vote. The top winner will receive three free months of membership, and the other finalists will each receive one free month!

For this challenge, we’re calling our recommended nutrition plan “Paleo Plus,” as it is essentially the Paleo diet with a few extra allowances for foods that may optimize your performance. While you will not be judged on the contents of your food log, we define and recommend the following foods as “clean”:
  • Quality meats
  • Eggs
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Nuts and Seeds
  • Water, tea, coffee
  • Plus items: White rice, butter, yogurt, cheese
And these are the foods we recommend that you avoid:
  • Processed foods
  • Breads, pasta, and all grains other than white rice
  • Legumes
  • Dairy aside from butter, yogurt, and cheese
  • Soft drinks and alcohol
At the potluck dinner we will have detailed discussion about what, how much, and when to eat to achieve your goals.  

There will be a $20 participation fee to get you invested in the challenge and go towards expenses and prizes.  We encourage ALL members to participate - you'll have all of the information and support you could possibly need, and it will be a fun challenge for us to complete as a community!
